Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a native perennial grass that gets beaucoup points for its host plant status. It’s a host plant for six Skipper species, the Northern Pearly-Eye, and the Common Wood Nymph butterfly. Its a full to partial sun lover and grows well in medium wet-medium dry soils. It grows to the height of six-seven feet. It is quite expressive so maybe not the best choice for smaller spaces. A perfect landscape plant that expresses several shades of color throughout the season. It blooms June-September.
